questions about your water

What causes cloudy water?

Cloudy or milky-looking water is usually caused by trapped air picked up from an air pocket in the water main. Unusual surges or flows within the aqueduct can also trap air, similar to a waterfall. If the water is allowed to sit in a glass or pitcher for a few minutes, the air will dissipate and the water will become clear.

What causes yellow or brown water?

Yellow water may be caused by manganese, a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and is added to dietary supplements for joint and muscle health. When manganese builds up in the pipes, it also creates brown sediment that can be picked up when the water pressure changes. Our water is closely monitored, and manganese levels have not exceeded any health standards. However, we are testing a variety of treatment procedures to reduce problems with colored water in the near future. To avoid laundry stains, please do not use chlorine bleach when water is discolored.

What causes bad odors?

Musty or fishy odors can be caused by harmless algae in the water, especially during the hot summer months. Even after chlorine has been added to disinfect the water, these odors may persist. Odors may also be caused, however, by a cross-connection problem in your home or neighborhood. A cross-connection could allow wastewater or chemicals to back up into the fresh water supply.

Sweetwater Authority has an aggressive program to prevent cross-connection problems. Please telephone Sweetwater Authority at (619) 420-1413, if you notice any unpleasant odors, so that we may investigate the cause and prevent health hazards.
