FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FAKE WATER WORKERS HIT SOUTH BAY COMMUNITIES

Water officials have received reports from two customers of recent attempts to gain entry into homes by a person posing as a water agency employee. In both cases, a man stated he was investigating water pressure and high water bills related to planned street construction. He then offered a $50 refund to the customer, if the customer could provide change for a $100 bill.

The cases appear similar to a San Diego incident, where a Centre City resident lost nearly $500 on April 22.

The most recent activity occurred on Tremont Street in Chula Vista, and on Virginia Drive in National City. In both cases, the targeted victims were elderly. The perpetrator has been described as a Caucasian male, approximately 35 years old, with brown hair and blue eyes. He is said to be traveling with two men in a car with Baja California plates.

Water officials note that similar activities seem to occur almost annually. Sweetwater Authority has adopted several procedures designed to protect customers from such activities. Employees drive company vehicles, carry official identification cards and will enter a home only if another employee is present. Customers of Sweetwater Authority are urged to telephone the office, at 619/420-1413, to verify employment before allowing any "water employee" to enter a residence.

Editors' Note: Sweetwater Authority provides public water service to 175,000 residents of Chula Vista, National City and Bonita.
