Hilltop High School Seniors Win $1000 Scholarships

Sweetwater Authority and South Bay Irrigation District nominees Kenneth Emerson and Nikolas Kennedy from Hilltop High School were two of the thirteen winners who received $1000 college scholarships at the May 19, 2005 meeting of the California Special Districts Association, held at the Doubletree Club Hotel, San Diego. The Association teamed with the Water Agencies Association of San Diego, Council of Water Utilities, Dudek & Associates, and Poseidon Resources, Inc. to award the scholarships to the students.

Kenneth will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with plans to major in Biology, and Nikolas will be attending UC Santa Barbara majoring in Psychology.

Winners were chosen based on grade point average, school activities, participation in the community, and a brief paper each student wrote on special districts.

The regional scholarships are awarded annually to help students learn more about the importance of special districts. Special districts, such as water, fire and community service districts, are not as well understood as other forms of local government.

Sweetwater Authority provides public water service to 177,000 people residing in National City and the South Bay Irrigation District (which includes portions of Chula Vista and most of Bonita).
