Water district treasurer and former board member, Wanda Avery, dies

Wanda Avery, longtime treasurer of the Sweetwater Authority and South Bay Irrigation District, died Saturday, July 16, after a short illness. She was 87.

Avery previously served on the South Bay Irrigation District (SBID) Board of Directors from 1969 to 1971. She and her husband Gilbert farmed land in Chula Vista and they recognized the importance of a stable and reliable water supply to the South Bay's vitality and future.

In 1972, she was appointed treasurer to SBID. After the formation of Sweetwater Authority in 1977, she served as treasurer to both boards until May of this year.

"Wanda will be remembered for her loyalty and dedication to the customers served by South Bay Irrigation District and Sweetwater Authority," said General Manager Dennis Bostad.

Sweetwater Authority provides public water service to 177,000 residents of Chula Vista, National City and Bonita.
