vouchers
(En espaņol)
Plan now to replace old appliances and fixtures with water-saving equipment. Toilets that use up to seven gallons of water per flush can be replaced with new ultra-low-flush models using only 1.5 gallons. Clothes washers that use up to 50 gallons per load can be replaced with new high efficiency models that use as little as 8 gallons of water per load. Vouchers, available in July, provide up to $75 toward the purchase of ULF toilets and
$100 toward the purchase of clothes washers. To request a voucher, call 1-800-986-4538 or be placed on the waiting list. (If your name is already on the waiting list, there is no need to call again.)
Outdoor Conservation
Outdoor water use accounts for up to 60 percent of all residential water consumption. Most of that water is used on landscaping and lawns. Here are some helpful tips to help you maintain a beautiful landscape AND save water.
Outdoor Water Conservation Tips
· Plant drought-tolerant "native" Southern California or Mediterranean plants
· Water plants no more than twice a week.
· Water plants and grass early in early morning or evening to avoid evaporation.
· Use a broom, not a hose, to clean paved areas and patios.
· Put mulch around flowers, shrubs and trees to help soil retain moisture.
· Replace sprinklers with drip-irrigation systems when possible.
Just for summer: Gardening Tips
· The fire season is already underway. Ask your local fire department for advice about planting and trimming your landscape to protect your home from fires, particularly if you live on a canyon or near open space.
· Be diligent about irrigation needs. Overwatering can be just as damaging to plants as underwatering. It also results in runoff, which wastes water and pollutes our streams and bays.
· Install a shade cloth or patio cover to protect you and your plants.
· Check your irrigation controller before you take a summer vacation.
· Make sure that shrubs are heavily mulched for a long dry spell.
· To protect plants from Santa Ana winds, install latticework, fences or wind barriers.
