Mona Rios was appointed to serve on the Sweetwater Authority (Authority) Governing Board. Her appointment was made official at the City of National City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 15.

In addition to being appointed to the Authority’s Board, Rios was also appointed to serve as vice chair of the San Diego County Water Authority (Water Authority). This is the first time in the Authority’s history that a member of its Governing Board has served in a leadership role at the Water Authority. Rios joined the San Diego County Water Authority Board in January 2020. She has served at the City of National City as a Council Member since 2010.

Rios joins newly elected Authority Director Paulina Martinez-Perez on the Authority’s Governing Board. For the first time in the history of the Authority, there is a female majority on the Governing Board.

“The Board is looking forward to Ms. Rios joining the Governing Board, and we are excited about her role at the Water Authority. Our Board has been a long-time champion of the good work that his happening in South County, and we look forward to Directors Martinez-Perez and Rios being a part of it,” said Steve Castaneda, Chair.

The Authority’s Governing Board is composed of seven members; five directors are elected by division by the citizens of the South Bay Irrigation District, and two directors are appointed by the Mayor of National City, subject to City Council confirmation.
