Water supplies remain sufficient and reliable despite statewide drought

Thanks to investments in local water supplies, and customers’ water-saving efforts, Sweetwater Authority (Authority) has sufficient water to meet customer needs, despite forecasts of a third consecutive dry year.

Earlier this week, the Department of Water Resources announced an initial water allocation of 0% from the State Water Project for California water districts. These allocations do not significantly impact the water available to Authority customers. The yearly allocation is a small portion of the total water supply for San Diego water agencies.

The Authority’s local water supplies include two reservoirs and groundwater wells connected to the Authority’s desalination facility, which provides a drought-proof water source. The majority of the water the Authority provides customers each year comes from these local sources.

In addition to these supplies, Authority customers’ wise water use ensures enough water is available despite dry conditions. Authority customers are consistently some of the lowest water users in the region and the state.

“Using water wisely is a way of life for our customers,” said Board Chair Hector Martinez. “The Governing Board is grateful for customers’ efforts to save this most precious resource. It is thanks to those efforts, and our ample local water supply, that we can weather these dry years, and continue to provide reliable and affordable water to our community.”

The Authority encourages customers to continue to use water wisely, aiding those efforts with rebates and resources available at www.sweetwater.org/waterefficiency.
