Sweetwater Authority Governing Board Issues Billing Moratorium for Federal Workers Affected by the Federal Government Shutdown
Chula Vista, CA - On November 12, 2025, Sweetwater Authority’s Governing Board approved a six-month moratorium on late fees and discontinued water service for non-payment for customers impacted by the federal government shutdown.
The federal government shutdown began on October 1, 2025, after Congress was unable to pass funding legislation. On November 12, 2025, Congress passed a short-term Continuing Resolution that runs through January 30, 2026. Eligible Sweetwater Authority customer groups include: military families, federal service employees, and businesses serving military families.
“Sweetwater Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to serving our community with compassion and responsibility,” said Chair Manny Delgado. “The Board’s approval of a six-month moratorium for customers affected by the federal shutdown reflects our dedication to ensuring continued access to safe, reliable water for all customers during times of financial uncertainty.”
The Governing Board issued similar moratoriums in 2020 and 2024 to alleviate the impacts on customers affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and recent South San Diego County floods, respectively.
The moratorium will allow impacted residents to focus on recovery and provide sufficient time to access other potential assistance programs. Affected customers are urged to call our Customer Service Department at (619) 420-1413 to discuss their account needs and options.
