Sweetwater Authority (Authority) is celebrating its 40th anniversary and four decades of providing its 189,000 customers with safe, reliable water. That is more than 200 billion gallons of water being delivered to customers that has met or exceeded all water quality requirements since 1977.
The Authority’s Governing Board and staff would like to thank its valued customers and looks forward to years of providing continued safe and reliable water service for the community. In the year ahead, the Authority will continue to focus on providing excellent customer service, ensuring a long-term water supply, upgrading infrastructure, and communicating with openness and transparency to customers and community partners.
The Authority was formed in 1977 after a lengthy court battle and public election process that voted in favor of the agency becoming a publicly owned water agency. A Joint Powers Agreement was drawn between the City of National City and the South Bay Irrigation district to form the Authority.
The Authority’s policies and procedures are established by a seven member Board of Directors. The Authority’s Governing Board is composed of five directors elected by division by the citizens of the South Bay Irrigation District, and two directors appointed by the Mayor of National City, subject to City Council confirmation.
