SWA awards WEEP grant to City of Chula Vista’s NatureScape Program

City of Chula Vista presented grant check

Sweetwater Authority (Authority) presented a $5,000 award check to the City of Chula Vista Office of Sustainability at its July 25 Board meeting as part of the Authority’s Water Efficiency Education Program (WEEP) grant program.

The grant award will assist the City of Chula Vista relaunch its NatureScape Program. Originally implemented in 2006, the goal of the program is to create “Certified Wildlife Habitats” in yards by using a certification process from the National Wildlife Federation. The entrance and garden at the Authority’s administration building was named a Certified Wildlife Habitat in 2011. The relaunched program will engage residents and educate them through workshops and other information resources to create NatureScapes on their properties. The City of Chula Vista is planning to build upon the number of existing properties and create another 225 spaces throughout the City.

Along with funding and providing rebates and free residential water audits for customers and businesses, the Authority offers grant funding as part of its commitment to water efficiency. The WEEP Grant is a program designed to encourage water users in the Authority’s service area to implement educational displays, programs, lectures or instructional media to teach the importance and relevance of water resource efficiency and education.
