[ARCHIVED] Water quality information and updates

Water glass on table

Slight yellow/brown discoloration of water in portions of our service area caused by change in water source; water remains safe to drink

Sweetwater Authority (Authority) is aware that there is a slight yellow/brown discoloration in the water we are currently providing to customers in portions of our service area, including National City and Bonita. This discoloration is not a public health issue, and the water is safe to drink.

The slight yellow/brown discoloration is due to a change in water source, which can disturb settled minerals in the water mains, causing the discoloration. The minerals usually settle back down within a day. We are working to remedy this issue, and apologize for any inconvenience.

If you notice any of these water quality issues, try running the water at an outside hose bib for several minutes to flush the line between your meter and house. Inside your home or business, remove the aerators from your faucets, and then run the faucets for several minutes to keep from plugging water filters and toilets. We recommend monitoring water quality prior to starting laundry to avoid potential stains.

For more information on the color and odor of your water, see FAQs here.
